Holding the Hook
The hook should be held in the center with the hand as shown.

Starting Chain
Make the number of chains needed to correspond with the number of stitches required in the first row.

Forward
Fig 1.
Working into back loop only of each chain, insert hook into second chain from hook, yarn over, draw loop trough and leave on hook.

Fig 2.
Insert hook into next chain, yarn over, draw loop through and leave on hook. Repeat this in each chain to end. Do not turn.

The number of loops on hook should equal the number of stitches required for the first row.

Note: Because the fabric produced in Tunisian crochet is usually firmer than ordinary crochet we recommend that the hook is inserted into the back loop only of the starting chain as this produces a firmer edge.

Return
Fig 1.
Yarn over, draw through one loop. (This chain forms the edge stitch).

Fig 2.
Yarn over, and draw through two loops.

Fig 3.
Repeat step 2 until one loop remains on hook. Do not turn. The loop remaining on the hook becomes the first stitch of the following row.
