Chain Stitches

The chain stitch is one of the easiest stitches to learn, and with a little practice, you are ready to start crocheting! The key is to maintain an even tension. An even foundation will enhance the beauty of every project; from filet crochet lace and doilies, to colorful granny squares and ripple afghans, and more!

	Click each diagram for a larger view. Fig 1 Pull the hook and strand of yarn through the loop of the slip knot to make a chain stitch. Fig 2 Push the hook so the new loop is in the center of the shaft to maintain a constant size in your chain stitches. Fig 3 Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook to make another chain stitch. Repeat and move your holding fingers up close to the hook on every third or fourth chain stitch. Push the hook so the new loop is in the center of the shaft. Fig 4 Do not count the slip knot or the loop on the hook as the chain.
