FIRST MOTIF: Ch 5; join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1); [dc, ch 1] 11 times in ring; join with a sl st in 3rd ch of ch-4.

Rnd 2: Sl st in first sp; Beg CL, [ch 2, CL] twice, * ch 5, [CL, ch 2] twice, CL; rep from * around; (ch 2, dc in top of Beg CL) to join and form last corner.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, 3 sc over dc, * [ch 3, 2 sc in next sp] twice, ch 3 **, (3 sc, ch 5, 3 sc) all in ch-5 sp; rep from * around, end at **; 3 sc in first sp, ch 5; join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF-Rnds 1 and 2: Work same as First Motif.
Rnd 3-Joining Rnd: Ch 1, 3 sc over dc, [ch 3, 2 sc in next sp] twice, ch 3, 3 sc in ch-5 sp, ch 2, with wrong sides together sc in ch-5 sp of first motif, ch 2, 3 sc in same ch-5 sp of 2nd motif, [ch 1, sc in ch- 3 sp of first motif, ch 1, 2 sc in ch-2 sp of 2nd motif ] twice, ch 1, sc in ch-3 sp of first motif, ch 1, 3 sc in ch-5 sp of 2nd motif, ch 2, sc in ch-5 sp of first motif, ch 2, 3 sc in same ch-5 sp of 2nd motif; complete rnd as for First Motif.

Join 21 motifs to form top strip, then join 19 motifs to top strip as in diagram, then 17 motifs, then 15 motifs, etc, to bottom single motif.

TO JOIN ON 2 SIDES: Join first side to the second corner then work the corner joining sc into the sc of previous joining; join 2nd side as before.

FINISHING-Border: With right side facing, attach thread at upper right corner to work across straight edge.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, (counts as hdc), (2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) all in ch-5 sp, * [3 hdc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times **, 3 hdc under joining sc; rep from * across top edge to next corner, end at **; (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) in ch-5 sp, *** [3 hdc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) all in ch-5 sp, [3 hdc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, hdc in next sp, skip joining, hdc in next sp; rep from *** to single motif at lower edge; continue in same manner to upper right corner; join with a sl st in top of ch-2.

Rnd 2: Sl st to ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 hdc in same sp, * 3 hdc between next two 3-hdc groups; rep from * to corner; 3 hdc in last ch-2 sp. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Fringe (Optional): Cut thread into 13" lengths. With 7 strands held together, fold in half forming a loop; insert crochet hook from the wrong side of the fabric into a corner sp and into the loop; pull loop through sp, then pull ends through the loop and tighten. Trim ends even.
