NOTES:
1. The afghan consists of 25 pattern squares bordered in double crochet filet. An embroidered design is applied to the appropriate square, the squares are sewn together and a striped border and fringe are worked on each end of the afghan.

2. To change color: work last stitch until 2 lps remain on the hook; yarn over with new color to complete stitch.

SQUARE 1 (Make 8): With CA, ch 33.
Row 1 (Right Side): Dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across; turn - 31 sts.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3; turn.
Row 4: Rep Row 2 changing to CB in last st. Drop but do not cut CA.
Row 5: With CB, ch 1, sc in first 22 dc; [yo and draw up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps] 3 times all in next dc, yo and draw through all 4 lps on hook - CL made; sc in next 7 dc and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Row 6 (Right Side): With right side facing insert hook in first sc and draw up CA, ch 2, skip first sc, hdc in each sc across; turn.
Row 7: Ch 3, skip first hdc, dc in each hdc across and in top of ch-2; turn.
Rows 8-10: Rep Row 2.
Row 11: Rep Row 4.
Row 12: With CB, ch 1, sc in each dc across and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Rows 13-18: Rep Rows 6-11.
Row 19: With CB, ch 1, sc in first 26 dc, CL in next dc, sc in next 3 dc and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Row 20: Rep Row 6.

Rows 23-25: Rep Rows 6-8. Do not fasten off and do not turn.

Border: Ch 7, dc in base of ch-7 for corner; work [ch 1, dc] 21 times evenly spaced down side of square, ch 4, dc in same sp as last dc worked for corner, work [ch 1, dc] 15 times evenly spaced along bottom of square, ch 4, dc in same ch as last dc worked for corner, work [ch 1, dc] 21 times evenly spaced up side of square, ch 4, dc in same sp as last dc worked for corner, work [ch 1, dc] 14 times evenly spaced along top of square, ch 1; join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch-7. Fasten off.

Rows 2-21: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3; turn. Do not fasten off and do not turn as end of last row. Work Border same as for Square 1.

SQUARE 3 (Make 2): With CA, ch 33.
Row 1 (Right Side): Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; turn - 31 sts.
Rows2-5: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3; turn.
Row 6: Rep Row 2 changing to CB in last sts. Drop but do not cut CA.
Row 7: With CB, ch 1, sc in first 19 dc, CL in next dc, sc in next 10 dc and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Rows 8 and 9: Rep Rows 6 and 7 of Square 1.
Rows 10-22: Rep Row 2. Do not fasten off and do not turn at end of last row. Work Border same as for Square 1.

SQUARE 4 (Make 2): With CA, ch 33.
Rows 1-11: Work Rows 1-11 of Square 3 changing to CB in last st of Row 11. Drop but do not cut CA.
Row 12: With CB, ch 1, sc in first 7 dc, CL in next dc, sc in next 22 sts and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Rows 13 and 14: Rep Rows 6 and 7 of Square 1.
Rows 15-23: Rep Row 2. Do not fasten off and do not turn at end of last row. Work Border same as for Square 1.

EMBROIDERY (See Templates): Using a photocopier, enlarge templates to the following dimensions:
Large flower: 10" x 9"
Small flower: 5" x 8"
Leaf: 9" x 8"
Trace onto cardstock or heavy paper. Use crafts knife to carefully cut out lines. Pin templates over appropriate squares and use chalk pencil to mark embroidery placement.

Mark four Square 2 squares with Large Flower template.
Mark two Square 3 squares with Small Flower template.
Mark two Square 4 squares with Leaf template.
(All of the Square 1 and nine of the Square 2 squares are not embroidered).

Embroider following chalk lines and using indicated stitches as follows:
Surface slip stitch (see photo): Make a slip knot and hold it on wrong side of fabric. Insert hook from right side of fabric to wrong side. Place slip knot on hook, draw lp to right side. Insert hook from right side to wrong side through desired stitch or space, yarn over, draw lp to right side and through lp on hook.

French Knot (see photo): Bring needle to right side at desired point for French Knot; wrap yarn around the needle 2-3 times, and push needle back down from right side to wrong side near the point where it came up.

Straight Stitch: Bring needle to right side at desired beginning point of stitch; insert needle back into fabric at desired end point of stitch. Repeat as desired.

Blanket Stitch (see photo): Bring needle up at point A, down at point B, and up at point C, directing needle over yarn when coming up at point C. Repeat, with point C becoming point A for each new stitch.

Daisy Stitch: Bring needle up at planned center of daisy, then back down again just next to the same point. Before drawing lp snug, bring needle up at end point of one petal and make a small stitch over the yarn lp, then pull all snug. (End of petal will be tacked down by small stitch). Repeat to make five petals, starting each at the same center point. Finish by making one French knot in center of flower.

FINISHING: Lay out squares as shown in diagram NOTING that one Square 3 of the center row and all of the squares in the two lowermost rows are turned 180 degrees as shown in the photo; sew together. Weave in all ends.

Stripe Border (Work on Top and Bottom): With right side facing, join CA in corner ch-4 sp.
Row 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp as joining, 2 dc in next sp and in each sp across square, * dc in seam, 2 dc in each sp across next square; rep from * across, work one more dc in corner sp; turn - 176 sts.
Row 2:Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3, changing to CB in last st; turn. Drop but do not fasten off CA.
Row 3: With CB, ch 1, sc in first 25 dc, CL in next dc, sc in next 65 dc, CL in next dc, sc in each dc across and in top of ch-3. Fasten off CB.
Row 4: With right side facing insert hook in first st and draw up CA, ch 3, skip first sc, dc in each st across. Fasten off CA.
Row 5: With right side facing, attach CB in top of ch-3; ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each dc across. Fasten off CB.
Row 6: With right side facing, attach CA in first sc of last row; ch 3, dc in next sc and in each sc across; turn.
Rows 7 and 8: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3; turn. Fasten off CA.
Row 9: With right side facing, attach CB in top of ch-3; ch 1, sc in first 84 sts, CL in next dc, sc in next 65 dc, CL in next dc, sc in each dc across. Fasten off CB.
Row 10: Rep Row 6.
Row 11: Ch 3, skip first st, sc in next st, * ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st; rep from * across – 88 ch-3 sps. Fasten off.

FRINGE:Cut sixty 10" strands each of CA and CB. Holding 2 strands of each color together, fold in half forming a loop, draw the loop through the first ch-3 sp of Row 11, draw ends through the loop and tighten. Rep in every 3rd sp across – 30 fringes. Trim.
