Cross-Stitch Counterpane (1922)
Timeless in their elegance, these beautiful counted cross stitch motifs and floral sprays are as contemporary today as when they were first published in 1922!
Originally stitched on 10 mesh canvas using six strands of "Coats Six Strand Floss," this elegant counted cross stitch design is typical of the patterns needleworkers created to decorate their homes. To create the pillow as shown, the colorful floral spray was stitched first, and then a solid background was stitched in black.
To finish the pillow, a piping of lavender and blue satin was used to frame the needlework, which was followed by adding "black satin for a puff for the edge, and the back of the pillow... corded in strips three inches apart."
We have adapted the original charts to Anchor Six Strand Embroidery Floss and published them for your enjoyment in the free projects section for Hand Embroidery.
Happy Stitching!
