This free-style embroidery is worked without using a hoop. Use the hemmed edges of the garments as guides for stitch placement. If desired, use a washable pen to mark placement of design elements. Cut the floss into 18" lengths. Separate the floss into 6 single strands of thread then put 3 strands together and thread into the needle. All the stitches shown were worked with 3 strands of floss. Work with an even tension to avoid puckers or loose stitches. Keep thread untangles while stitching by letting the needle hang so that the thread will unwind. End thread that begins to look worn or frayed by securing with tiny backstitches in the embroidered threads on the wrong side of the fabric. If you need to remove stitches, use the blunt end of the needle and remove stitches one by one. Do not re-use the thread except to secure it on the wrong side of the fabric.
NOTE: Click the Stitch Diagrams for a larger view of all the stitches. Click the Pattern Diagram for a larger view of the shirt pattern.
A. Stem Stitch Work from left to right, taking regular, slightly slanted stitches along the line of the design. The thread always emerges on the left side of the previous stitch.
B. Secured Cross Stitch Bring the needle through on the lower right line of the cross and insert at the top of the same line, taking a stitch through the fabric to the lower left line (A). Complete the other half of the cross (B), taking a small stitch through the fabric at the center of the cross (C).
C. Zig-Zag Chain Stitch Bring the thread through at (A) and hold it down with the left thumb. Insert the needle at (A) and bring it through at (B), the required length of the stitch. The second stitch is worked in exactly the same way at right angles to the first stitch, but the needle, as it enters the fabric (C), pierces the end of the first loop, thus insuring the each loop is held in position.
D. Lazy Daisy Stitch Bring the thread out at the top of the line and hold down with left thumb. Insert the needle where it last emerged and bring the point out a short distance away. Pull the thread through, keeping the working thread under the needle point (A) and fasten each loop at the center with a small stitch (B).
E. Straight Stitch Single spaced stitches worked either in a regular or irregular manner. The stitches can be of varying size. The stitches should ne neither too long nor too loose. |
