Casting On - Sling Shot Method
Recommended by how-to books, use this technique to cast on stitches when you need an edge that is elastic, such as before garter-stitch or stockinette stitch rows.

Make a slip knot one or more yards from the end as required. Keep the cut end to your left and the skein end to your right.

With the needle in your right hand and your finger holding the stitch, bring your left forefinger and thumb between the strands, hold the yarn ends, and open your fingers to form a "V".

Swing the needle point under the left strand and back through the loop on the thumb then over and under the right strand and back through the loop on the thumb.

Remove the thumb from the loop; insert it between the strands to tighten the loop on the needle.
