Cable needle; stitch marker; 2 stitch holders; 12" zipper; decorative zipper tab (optional); 1¼ yards of 1½"wide twill tape; 1/3 yard of lining fabric; sewing needle and thread.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

M1 : make 1 stitch by picking up horizontal strand lying between stitches and working into the back of it.
C6B : slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work, K3, then K3 from cable needle.

NOTE: Body of purse is worked in rnds. Handles are knit in rows and joined at top. Inside is lined with fabric.

BAG: Cast on 168 sts. Join in rnd being careful that stitches are not twisted. Place a marker between first and last sts to mark beginning and end of rnds. Work in pat as follows:

Rnd 1: * K5, P2, K3, P2; rep from * around.

Rnd 2: * K3, M1, K2, P2, K3, P2; rep from * around – 182 sts.

Rnd 3: * C6B, P2, K3, P2; rep from * around.

Rnds 4-10: * K6, P2, K3, P2; rep from * around. Rep Rnds 3-10 for cable pat until approximately 10 1/2" from beginning, end by working Rnd 4.

Remove marker, slip last 2 sts from right hand needle to left hand needle; replace marker; slip the same sts back to the right needle.

Shape Handles-Next Row (Right Side): [K6, P2, K3, P2] 5 times, K6, P2; put the 75 sts from marker on a holder; K3, P2, K6, P2, K3 – 16 sts for handle.
Keeping continuity of pat work back and forth in rows on these 16 sts:
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 (Wrong Side): P3, K2, P6, K2, P3.
Rows 3, 5, 9: K3, P2, K6, P2, K3.
Row 7: K3, P2, C6B, P2, K3.
Row 10: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 4-10 for first handle until handle measures 18".
Bind off in pat.

With right side facing, join yarn to remaining sts; [P2, K6, P2, K3] 5 times, P2, K6, P2; put these 75 sts just worked on a second holder; K3, P2, K6, P2, K3 – 16 sts for second handle. Work same as for first handle.

Top Edging: With right side facing, join yarn to 75 sts on one holder; * K4, K2tog; rep from * to last 3 sts; K3 – 63 sts. Knit 8 rows. Bind off.
Rep Top Edging with sts on remaining holder.

BASE: Cast on 13 sts. Knit every row until work, slightly stretched, measures 14 1/2". Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew base to cast on edge of bag having corners in line with position of handles. Sew bind off edges of handles together. Sew twill tape to wrong side of handle leaving approximately 1" ends of tape extending into body of bag at each end. Fold Top Edgings toward inner edge of handles and sew sides of edging in position through all thicknesses. Sew zipper in position under Edgings.
Cut lining fabric into 1 large piece measuring 29" wide x 11 1/2" high and 1 small piece for base measuring 14" long x 3" wide. Sew sides of large piece together with 1/2" seam; pin to small lining piece having seam at center back; sew together with 1/2" seam. Press under 1/2" to wrong side at top of unfinished edge of large piece. With wrong sides together, pin this edge to inside of purse along first row of Top Edgings and bases of handles. Sew lining in position. If desired, replace zipper tab with decorative tab.
