BACK: With larger needles and CA, cast on 60 (70, 76) sts. Knit 4 rows. Now work in St st, beg K row, until 11 (13, 14)" from beg, end P row. Bind off loosely. Mark center 34 (36, 36) sts for neck and outer 13 (17, 20) sts on each side for shoulders.

FRONT: Work same as back until 9½ (11½, 12)" from beg, end P row.

Divide for Neck: K16 (20, 23) sts, turn and put rem sts on holder. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 K rows – 13 (17, 20) sts. Work even until front measures same as back to shoulder. Bind off loosely.

With right side facing, join yarn to rem sts, bind off center 28 (30, 30) sts marking between the center 2 sts, K to end – 16 (20, 23) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 K rows – 13 (17, 20) sts. Work even until front measures same as back to shoulder. Bind off loosely.

SLEEVES: With larger needles and CA, cast on 32 (40, 40) sts. Knit 4 rows. Work in St st, beg K row, shaping sides by inc 1 st each end of 3rd row, then every 4th row until there are 56 (68, 72) sts. Work even until 8¼ (10, 11)" from beg, end P row. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Mark front and back 6¼ (7½, 8)" down from shoulder seams. Place center of sleeve tops at shoulder seams and sew in place between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Neck Ruffle: With right side facing, smaller circular needle and CA, beg at center front marker, pick up and K14 (15, 15) sts across right front neck, 6 (7, 7) sts up to shoulder, 34 (36, 36) sts across back neck, 6 (7, 7) sts down left front, 14 (15, 15) sts across left front neck – 74 (80, 80) sts. Turn.

Next 3 Rows: * K1, P1; rep from * across; turn.

Change to larger needles.
Ruffle-Next Row: * Inc2; rep from * across – 222 (240, 240) sts. Work back and forth in St st, beg K row, for 1". K 2 rows. Bind off loosely.

Weave double strand of elastic thread through ribbing on wrong side. Ease up fullness to hold collar in place. Fasten off.

Button: With crochet hook, join CB with sc in ring; work sc around until ring is quite full and no longer visible; join with a sl st in first sc. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. With yarn needle, weave yarn tail in and out of the top loops of each sc, drawing edge toward center of circle. Fasten off. Attach button at center front of sweater neck.
