instructions

Notes:
Lower body is worked in one piece to the armholes, then divided for working the upper fronts and back separately.

Work the Diamond chart using only Colors C and E throughout. Work stitches shown in Color B on chart with Color E, then duplicate stitch using Color B during finishing. Embroider cross stitches shown on chart during using Color D.

This garment is planned to have a “wingspan” measurement from cuff to cuff of 58¼ (58¾, 59¼, 59½)” [148 (149, 150, 151) cm]. Because the larger sizes have increasingly wider bodies, they have shorter sleeves in order to keep the wingspan from becoming too wide. To customize the fit, work more or fewer rows for your sleeves to achieve the desired length.

LOWER BODY
With smaller needle and Color A, cast on 169 (189, 209, 229) sts. Work lower edging beg with a WS row as follows:
Rows 1 – 3: With Color A, knit 3 rows, ending with a WS row.
Rows 4 - 6: With Color B, knit 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row.
Rows 7 - 9: With Color C, purl 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row.
Rows 10 – 12: With Color A, knit 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row.
Rows 13: With Color D, purl 1 WS row, increasing 20 sts evenly across - 189 (209, 229, 249) sts.
Rows 14 and 15: With Color D, purl 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row.
Change to larger needles. Using Colors C and E only, work in pattern from Diamond chart until piece meas 13 (13½, 14, 14½)” [33 (34.5, 35.5, 37) cm] from beg, ending with a WS row.
Divide for Fronts and Back (RS): Work 44 (50, 55, 60) sts in pattern for right front, place next 101 (109, 119, 129) sts on holder or length of scrap yarn for back, place rem 44 (50, 55, 60) sts on separate holder for left front.

RIGHT FRONT
Working back and forth in rows on 44 (50, 55, 60) sts of Right Front only, work even in pattern until piece meas 14 (15, 16, 17)” [35.5 (38, 40.5, 43) cm] from beg, ending with a WS row.
Shape Right Front neck: Bind off 1 st at neck edge (beg of RS rows) every RS row 5 (6, 8, 10) times, then every other RS row 6 (6, 5, 4) times - 33 (38, 42, 46) sts rem. Work even in pattern until piece meas, 21 (22, 23, 24)” [53.5 (56, 58.5, 61) cm] from beg. Bind off all sts.

LEFT FRONT
Return 44 (50, 55, 60) held sts of Left Front to needle and rejoin yarns with RS facing, ready to work a RS row. Work even in pattern until piece meas 14 (15, 16, 17)” [35.5 (38, 40.5, 43) cm] from beg, ending with a RS row.
Shape Left Front neck: Bind off 1 st at neck edge (beg of WS rows) every WS row 5 (6, 8, 10) times, then every other WS row 6 (6, 5, 4) times - 33 (38, 42, 46) sts rem. Work even in pattern until piece meas, 21 (22, 23, 24)” [53.5 (56, 58.5, 61) cm] from beg. Bind off all sts.

BACK
Return 101 (109, 119, 129) held sts of Back to needle and rejoin yarns with RS facing, ready to work a RS row. Work even in pattern until piece meas 21 (22, 23, 24)” [53.5 (56, 58.5, 61) cm] from beg. Bind off all sts.

SLEEVES
With larger needle (sleeve cuff is deliberately looser than lower edge of body) and Color A, cast on 49 sts for all sizes. Work Rows 1 – 15 as for lower body, ending with a WS row. Using Colors C and E only, work in pattern from Diamond chart, and AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 st at each edge every other row 0 (0, 6, 12) times, then every 4th row 18 (20, 17, 13) times, working new sts into chart pattern – 85 (89, 95, 99) sts. Work even in pattern until piece meas 19½ (19, 18¼, 17½)” [49.5 (48.5, 46.5, 44.5) cm] from beg or desired length. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.

Front band: With Color A, with RS facing and beg at lower edge of right front, pick up and knit 93 (97, 100, 103) sts to shoulder seam, 36 (34, 36, 40) across back neck, and 93 (97, 100, 103) sts from shoulder to lower edge of left front – 222 (228, 236, 246) sts. Working back and forth in rows, work as follows:
Rows 1 and 2: With Color A, knit 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row.
Rows 3 – 5: With Color D, knit 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row.
Rows 6 – 8: With Color B, purl 1 WS row, purl 1 RS row, knit 1 WS row.
Rows 9 – 11: With Color A, knit 3 rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Embroidery: With Color B, embroider the outline of an inner diamond using duplicate stitch inside each of the larger diamonds as shown on chart. With Color D, embroider a small cross inside each smaller diamond as shown on chart.

Button loops (make 4): With smaller circular or pair of double-pointed needles and Color A, cast on cast on 10 sts, leaving a 7” [18 cm] or longer tail. Knit one row, then bind off all sts as if to knit. Cut yarn, leaving a 7” [18 cm] or longer tail. Make 3 more button loops in the same manner. Set aside.

Knitted buttons (make 4): With double-pointed needles and Color A, cast on 8 sts, leaving a 10” [25.5-cm] tail. Distribute sts as evenly as possible on 3 needles, place marker (pm), and join for working in the rnd.
Rnd 1: Purl.
Rnds 2 and 3: Knit 2 rnds.
Rnd 4: * K1, knit into front and back of next st (k1f&b); rep from * to end - 12 sts.
Rnd 5: Knit 1.
Rnd 6: *K2, k1f&b; rep from * to end - 16 sts.
Rnds 7 and 8: Purl 2 rnds.
Rnds 9 and 10: Change to Color C, and knit 2 rnds.
Rnd 11: * K1, k2tog; rep from * to last st, end k1 - 11 sts.
Rnd 12: Change to Color A, and knit 1 rnd.
Rnd 13: [K2tog] 5 times, k1 – 6 sts.
Rnd 14: [K2tog] 3 times – 3 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 10” [25.5-cm] tail. Thread yarn through rem sts and pull tight to close center front of button. Bring all ends to the inside of the button and out the opening at the cast-on edge. Tug ends to tighten joins at color changes. Wrap all ends except the cast-on and bind-off tails around your finger, and tuck them back inside to stuff the button. If necessary to stuff button more firmly, cut a 15” [38-cm] length of Color A, wrap around your finger, and stuff inside button. Thread cast-on tail through 8 sts of cast-on edge and pull tight to close center back of button. Using bind-off tail, sew through all layers of button in concentric rings to flatten the stuffing, then weave bind-off tail into center of button. When all buttons have been completed, use cast-on tails to attach buttons to left front along pickup row of left front edging, with the lowest button about 1” [2.5 cm] up from lower edge, the highest at beg of V-neck shaping, and the rem 2 buttons evenly spaced in between.

Sew button loops to bind-off edge of right front edging using cast-on and bind-off tails, and adjusting the size of the loops to accommodate the buttons. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armholes. Weave in ends.
