With a Size 11 needle and solid color yarn, pick up and knit 14 stitches evenly spaced ( 3 stitches per block plus 1 stitch in both the beginning and ending pink stripes). Turn work and purl back.
Continue in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for a total of 15 rows, ending with a WS row. Turn and with RS facing, bind off in knit.

Repeat this row a total of 24 times to create 12 rows of double faced fabric. End by completing the row facing the inside of the purse and turn.
With outside of purse facing, carefully withdraw needle from stitches. Twelve stitches will fall toward the inside of the purse.
Slip them onto a #11 dpn.

Resume working where the yarn is attached, with a third dpn, binding off in knit across all 12 sts.

ASSEMBLING THE PURSE Fold the purse so that there are 4 pattern blocks as the bottom: 3 pattern blocks on each side, and 2 pattern stripes on each side of the slit opening of the top.
Using the “mattress stitch” for an invisible seam, sew the sides of both flaps to the edges of the main piece.
Whip stitch the single layer flap to the top edges of the main piece.
To attach the double knit pocket, mattress stitch the top of the pocket to the top fold of the pocket flap, so that the pocket is open for easy access from the outside. This makes a handy spot for keys or cell phone that can be closed with a magnetic snap or a button.
Using the whip stitch, attach handles to the cast –on and bound off edges at the top of the bag. If the handles are short you may need the close up the opening at either end of the bag. If so, use the mattress stitch to weave the two top edges together through the inner edges of the cast on and bound off edges.
Attach button to double knit pocket, so that it aligns with the buttonhole on the flap.
Weave in ends. Dampen bag and block into shape with a rolled up towel. |
