instructions

Embroidered Blocks
Select a theme - birds and flowers were used in this wall hanging. Holiday designs, herbs, fruits & vegetables, and hobbies are just a few ideas.

Cut 12 squares of black fabric and stabilizer - 8" x 8".

Wind bobbins with black all-purpose thread.

Place black fabric and stabilizer in hoop. Using Rayon thread on top, stitch desired motif. Repeat for desired number of squares.

Trim each square to 6", centering motif.

Cutting
Cut from print fabric:
4 strips 2"x 6"
3 strips 2"x 20"
2 strips 2" x 16"
Cut from black fabric & batting: 17" x 23" rectangle

Casing: 1 strip 3" x 15½"

Binding; 1¼" strip, approx. 4 yds.

Assembly
Determine arrangement of embroidered blocks. Sew 6" strips to top and bottom of middle squares (b). Sew the lower edge of the top square and the top edge of the bottom square to the strips on the middle squares. Repeat for the remaining 3 squares.

Join the 3 square strips with a 20" fabric strip. Sew a 20" strip to each side of this unit.

Sew the 16" strip to the top and bottom of the 6-square unit.

Quilting
Place the black backing fabric wrong side up on a flat surface. Place the batting on top of the backing. Place the completed quilt top on the batting, right side up.

Baste unit together. Quilt in the ditch around the black squares.

Finishing
Trim the edges of the backing, batting and top even.

Turn under ½" on 3 sides of the fabric for the casing. Pin or baste the cut edge to the top edge of the quilt, wrong side of casing against right side of backing fabric.

For binding, press under 1/4" on one long edge. Align cut edge of binding with edge of quilt, right sides together. Stitch. Corners may be mitered or the overlap method may be used. Fold pressed edge of the wrong side and blind stitch. Blindstitch lower edge of casing to quilt.
