One Stitch Quilting with Donna Dewberry and Coats Threads

Coats & Clark is pleased to announce our sponsorship of the Donna Dewberry Show on PBS. Donna Dewberry is well-known as the creator of the One Stroke Painting technique. But long before she began teaching herself to paint, Donna taught others how to make quilt blocks. Some of Donna’s earliest memories are visiting the fabric store with her grandmother to purchase fabric. Once Donna became well known for her painting, there was a natural transition for her to design fabrics first for garment making and then for quilting.

Donna Dewberry developed the One Stroke Painting technique to be a stress-free, stroke-by-stroke way of decorative painting. According to Donna, “One Stroke teaches how to paint flowers which are a popular subject and the most difficult to paint. With One Stroke, creating beautiful flowers is all a matter of how you load the brush."

When Donna turned her attention to quilting she was convinced that there had to be an easier way to create beautiful quilts. Donna teamed up with Cindy Casciato, a long time quilter, to come up with an alternative method to traditional quilting that would be less stressful for a beginner.” But how to “load the brush”? Just as in One Stroke, the paint brush is loaded with several colors to create the flower, Donna selected Coats Multicolor 100% Cotton Machine Quilting thread to load the brush –in this case your sewing machine.

The One Stitch Quilting technique combines the two basic processes of piecing and quilting to eliminate many of the steps in traditional patchwork. There is no quarter-inch piecing in One Stitch, instead it is replaced by over-lapped folded strips on top of a pre-printed fusible grid. The quilting and piecing is done in One Stitch through the batting and backing at the same time. This technique is perfect for anyone who has ever said “I would love to make a quilt, but I just don’t have the time.” Because all of the stitching shows, it is important to use a thread that compliments the colors in the fabrics. The contrasting and tonal color combinations Coats Multicolor 100% Cotton Machine Quilting thread provide a perfect palette for any One Stitch Quilting project.
