Coats Basting & Machine Embroidery Thread (Art N575) or
Coats Cotton Quilting Thread (V32)

Top Fabric: This is the decorative, visible layer, which could be patchwork, appliqué or another design.

Filler: A layer of cotton, wool or polyester batting to add thickness or "loft," as well as warmth and comfort.

Backing: This layer helps stabalize the quilt, and protects the filler from wear. It should be a firmly woven fabric, with the same care requirements as the top fabric.

instructions

Taking a few minutes to baste your layers together is well worth the effort. Due to their large size, it is easy for the fabric layers to shift out of position while you quilt, which could distort your finished design. Basting helps prevent this from happening.

Sandwich the layers: Place the backing fabric on a flat surface with the right side facing down (towards the table surface). Position the filler on the backing fabric, and place the decorative fabric on top of the filler, with the right-side facing up.

Basting the layers: Starting in the center, hand baste the layers from the center outward to prevent shifting. Use a cotton thread such as Coats Basting Thread or Coats 100% Mercerized Cotton Thread in a light color. Follow the illustrations, basting in a radial pattern (Fig 1) for small items, or in a grid pattern (Fig 2) for large items. Rows should be no more than 4 inches (10 cm) apart.
