Quilting by Hand
Before the advent of machines, all quilting and sewing was done by hand out of necessity. Today, many quilters enjoy the traditional method, watching as beautiful quilts develop at their fingertips as each stitch builds a work of art.
materials
Coats Dual Duty Plus Hand Quilting Thread
or
Coats Mercerized Cotton Hand Quilting thread
Quilting/Betweens Needles, size 8 or 9.
Hoop or wooden frame for small projects, quilting frame for large projects.
instructions
Use a single thread, 20 inches (50 cm) long and knotted at one end. Stitch from the center outward on the entire project and within individual designs.
Fig 1
Begin ½ inch (1.3 cm) from where you plan your first stitch. Push the point of the needle through the top layer and into the batting. Bring it up through the top layer at the site of the first stitch. Gently pull the thread to hide the knot in the batting.
Fig 2 : Quilting Stitch
Stitch toward you in an up and down motion with the needle perpendicular to the fabric. Using 6-8 stitches per inch, go through all layers, making the stitches the same length on both sides.
Fig 3
To end, stitch in place twice through the top fabric and pull the thread through the batting; cut the thread close to the fabric.
