Sewing Instructions
Note: Use a ¼” seam allowance throughout. Appliqué patterns are printed in reverse, and do not required a seam allowance.
Sew four beige squares alternately together with four dark brown squares to make one strip. Repeat to make a total of four strips. Referring to the photograph, stitch two of the strips. Referring to the photograph, stitch two of the strips lengthwise together so that the squares form a checkerboard design.
Using the patterns provided, trace one of each letter and three complete coffee cup shapes onto the double face fusible web. Cut out roughly. Fuse each shape onto the wrong side of the remaining brown fabrics, then cut out neatly.
Using the photograph as a guide, arrange the appliqués on the 5½” x 16½” beige pieces. Remove the paper backing and fuse in place. Machine appliqué around each shape using rayon thread and a narrow width satin stitch.
Assemble the quilt center by sewing the pieced strips and appliquéd pieces together as shown in the photograph.
Inner border. Stitch a 1½” x 20” medium brown strip to each side of the quilt center. Press and trim excess. Sew the remaining 1½” x 20” strips to the top and bottom. Press and trim excess.
Outer border. Attach the outer border strips in the same manner as for the inner border.
Layer the backing right side down, batting, and quilt top right side up. Base the layers together. Quilt as desired. (Note: The featured quilt is quilted along all seam lines and ¼” away from seam lines using multi-color thread. Diagonal lines were stitched in each square with contrasting thread. Stitch 1/8” from the raw edge of the quilt top. Trim backing and batting even with the quilt top.
Use all-purpose thread to sew the bias tape around the edges of the quilt. |
