Pink tonal fabric, 3/8 yd.
Green tonal fabric, 5/8 yd.
Black solid or tonal fabric, 1/8 yd.
Light weight cotton quilt batting, 18 X 22 inch square
Corded piping, 1/8 inch, 3 yds.
Fabric, 20 inch squares or 18 inch purchased napkin
Shank-style buttons, ½ inch, 2
Tear away stabilizer

Coats Polyester Embroidery threads, 7 colors:
2 Black
83B Temple gold
96 Violet
287A Bright green
308A Ultra-violet
320A Hot pink
387 Ellen rose

TOOLS:
In addition to a general sewing supplies kit, you will need an embroidery sewing machine and accessories, paper, pencil and ruler for pattern making, and a water or air soluble fabric pen.

Our project was embroidered on a Brother 2003D sewing machine using Brother embroidery card # 47 for Butterflies, designs # 1 and 9 Brother built-in design for Pansy Flower.

TRACE and DRAW PATTERNS

All pattern dimensions include ½ inch seam allowance.

1. Using paper and pencil and the 3 patterns provided, trace and draw UPPER WING, LOWER WING and butterfly BODY. Overlap upper and lower wing at seam line and draw WING BACK.

2. Measuring right angles carefully, draw two additional patterns:
-NAPKIN, 21” x 21”
-NAPKIN RING, 3” X 7”

CUT FABRICS (For one Place Setting)

3. Using straight pins, pin paper pattern to fabric or quilt batting and cut the desired number of pieces.

UPPER WING: Cut one piece from pink fabric placing pattern on fold.
LOWER WING: Cut one piece from green fabric placing pattern on fold.
BACK : (join upper and lower wing patterns), cut one piece each from green fabric and quilt batting placing pattern on fold.
BODY: Cut two pieces from black fabric and one from quilt batting.
NAPKIN: Cut one piece from linen fabric.
NAPKIN RING: Cut two pieces from green fabric and one from quilt batting.

EMBROIDERY APPLICATION
4. Before assembly, hoop Napkin and one piece of Napkin Ring, each backed with tear away stabilizer and embroider the recommended design. Position top of butterfly 9 inches from napkin center. Position Pansy in center of ring.

For each embroidery design, use the following Coats Polyester Embroidery threads. Listed in order of use.

Large Butterfly on Napkin:
96 Violet
287A Bright green
308A Ultra-violet
2 Black
83B Temple gold

Pansy Flower on Napkin Ring:
287A Green
2 Black
387 Ellen rose
308A Ultra-violet
320A Hot pink

PLACEMAT ASSEMBLY
Stitch all seams following ½ inch seam allowance unless stated otherwise.

5. With right sides of fabric together, stitch upper wing to lower wing. Press seam open.

6. Pin and baste quilt batting to wrong side of wing assembly ¼ inch from all edges.

7. With cut edges even, pin and stitch piping to right side of place mat, joining ends along a straight edge.

8. With right sides together, pin and stitch Wing Back to wing assembly along previous stitching line along all edges and leaving a 6 inch opening to turn.

9. Turn assembly to right side and slip stitch opening closed. Press lightly. Select a decorative stitch and a contrasting thread color. Sew through all layers in areas show in photo.  Set machine for a small zig zag stitch. Using black thread, stitch through all layers along quilting lines. Shorten stitch length for a Satin stitch. Stitch through all layers as shown in photo.

10. Pin and baste quilt batting to wrong side of one Body piece. With right sides of fabric together, pin and stitch Body pieces together along all edges leaving a 4 inch opening along one straight edge to turn.  Turn Bodyto the right side and slip stitch opening closed. Attach button eyes and stitch into place on wings.

NAPKIN
11. Press the raw edge of each 20” square under ½”. Turn the pressed edge under ½” and topstitch. Using a decorative stitch and contrasting thread color, stitch ¼” from hem.

NAPKIN RING ASSEMBLY
12. Pin and baste quilt batting to wrong side of embroidered Ring piece. With cut edges even, pin and baste piping to each long edge of Ring. With right sides of fabric together, pin and stitch Ring pieces together along both long edges over basting. Turn Ring to the right side and stitch together short ends.
