*Happy Dots, apricot,  from the Midwest Modern collection by Amy Butler for Westminster Fabrics was used in our example

Transferring the Image
1. Open the above pdf of the Trade Card. It has been sized for a 4 x 6” image, 300dpi resolution. Print a test on paper. In the print dialogue window,  ‘Page Scaling’ should be set at ‘NONE’. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for printing on the fabric sheet.

Cut out fabric image, leaving ¼” seam allowances.

2. Thread machine with Natural color Coats Cotton Machine Quilting thread. Sew one 6 ½ “  muslin strip to each long side of image fabric. Sew 6 “ muslin strip to each end.

3. Sew 8 ½” print strip to each long muslin strip and sew 8” print strips to top and bottom of pieced unit.
4. Place muslin backing on a flat surface. Cover with batting. Place pieced top, right side up over batting. Pin-baste together.  Trim raw edges of top, batting and backing even.

5. Thread machine with  Temple Gold quilting thread. Using a straight stitch, quilt by stitching in the ditch around image. Select a decorative stitch on your machine. We used a heart shaped motif, but any stitch pattern will work. Stitch around the outer edge of the muslin strip, using the seam line as a guide.

6. Binding: On 40” strip, press under ¼” on one long edge.  Align cut edge of binding with edge of quilt, right sides together. Stitch. Corners may be mitered or overlapped.
Fold pressed edge to the wrong side of quilt and sew in place by hand using a blind stitch.
