Measuring Pillow Form: Measure the pillow form across the center front from edge to edge. For a square or rectangular pillow, measure both the length and width; for a round pillow measure across the diameter (Fig 1 - measuring form).
Cutting the Fabric: Add a total of 1” to the length and width measurements (for ½ inch seam allowance on all sides).
Piping, Panels, Flaps: Before stitching the pillow front and back together, if desired: a) add embroidery or appliqué b) add panels, flaps or trims c) add cording, piping or ruffle
Assembling the Pillow 1. Pin the front and back pillow pieces right sides 2. Stitch around the pillow ½” from the raw edge, leaving an opening to insert the pillow form. On a square or rectangular pillow, start and stop on the bottom, 2” from the side edges. On a round pillow, leave approximately one-third of the pillow open. Use a zipper foot on the sewing machine if piping or cording was used. 3. Trim corners and seam allowances. Turn pillow right side out. Insert pillow form. 4. Turn under the raw edges of the pillow front and back along the opening. Hand-stitch the opening closed using a blind-stitch.
Piping or Cording 1. Determine the amount of piping needed by measuring the pillow form or fabric pieces where the piping will be placed. Add 2” for the join. 2. Pin the piping to the right side of the pillow piece with raw edges even (Fig. 2 piping - straight seam). (If you are using a cording, make sure it is aligned so that you will be stitching just to the right side of the seamline). Start at an inconspicuous area of the pillow. On corners and sharp curves, clip the raw edge of the piping almost to the stitching (Fig 3 - piping corner, Fig 4 - piping curve). At the end, overlap the piping (Fig 5 - piping end). With medium and thick piping, open the fabric and cut the cording at the seamline. 3. Machine-baste the piping in place along the piping stitching (Fig 6 - piping in seam) using a zipper foot or cording foot on the sewing machine. Later, when stitching a seam that includes piping, stitch just to the left of the basting using a zipper foot. |

1. Make a pattern by drawing a 15” square and drawing a diagonal line from one corner to the other. 2. Trace one triangle onto the solid fabric. 3. Select a floral embroidery design (this will depend on your sewing machine’s decorative stitch and embroidery options—we used Baby Lock Card #23). 4. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer and embroider design using Coats Polyester Embroidery thread in colors coordinating with the print fabric. 5. Cut out triangle. Cut a second triangle from print fabric. 6. Place triangles wrong sides together and sew the diagonal seam with a ½ “ seam allowance. Press seam open. 7. Pin braid across seam. Sew in place with match Dual Duty Plus All-purpose thread or Coats Transparent Nylon thread. 8. Follow instructions above for adding cording and assembly of pillow.
Tassel Pillow
1. Make a pattern of a triangle 9 ½ x 9 ½ x 15”. Trace triangle onto solid fabric. 2. Select a floral embroidery design (this will depend on your sewing machine’s decorative stitch and embroidery options—we used Baby Lock Card #23). 3. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer and embroider design using Coats Metallic Embroidery thread in colors coordinating with the print fabric. Cut out triangle. 4. Pin cording to triangle and machine baste in place following above instructions. 5. Pin triangles right sides together and sew the seams on the shorter sides. 6. Clip corner diagonally, turn to right side and press. Machine baste long side of triangle together. 7. Pin the triangle to the pillow top aligning raw edges, right sides together. 8. Assemble pillow according to above instructions, leaving the opening for turning on the opposite end from the flap. 9. Once pillow has been turned to the right side, attach a tassel to the point of the flap.
Fringed Pillow
1. The finished width for the band of solid fabric is 8”. Mark this width on the solid fabric, but do not cut it out until after it has been embroidered. 2. Select a floral embroidery design (this will depend on your sewing machine’s decorative stitch and embroidery options—we used Baby Lock Card #23). 3. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer and embroider design using Coats Polyester Embroidery thread in colors coordinating with the print fabric. 4. Cut the band 8” by 13”. Cut the rectangles from the print fabric 13” x 17” for the pillow top and back. 5. Place pillow top on hard surface right side up. Pin the embroidered band in the center of the pillow top. 6. Machine baste ¼” from each raw edge of the band Pin braid to pillow top, centering it over the 12” raw edges of the band. 7. Stitch in place using matching Dual Duty Plus All-purpose thread. 8. Pin fringe to each 12” end of pillow top aligning the finished edge with the raw edge of the fabric. Assemble pillow according to instructions above, being careful not to catch fringe in seams.
Tip: A strip of transparent tape over the fringe ends will keep them in place while you sew the pillow together. Remove the tape after turning to the right side. |
