instruction

cutting:
Royal Blue Solid Cotton:
1. Cut four 4 1/2" wide by 5 3/4" long rectangles for the Star of David treat bag and lining.
2. Cut one 2" wide by 3" long strip for the tab for the Star of David treat bag.
Silver Metallic Medium Rickrack:
1. Cut one 11" length for the handle on the Star of David treat bag.

instructions:
The seam allowances for this project are 1/4" unless otherwise noted.
1. To create the dreidel shape of this treat bag, cut triangles off of the right bottom and left bottom edges of the 4 1/2" x 5 3/4" fabric rectangles.
2. Place two rectangles at a time, right sides together on cutting mat. Fold the rectangles in half lengthwise. Use a ruler to carefully mark 4 1/4" from the top on the raw edge of the rectangle. Repeat this step on the other two rectangles.
3. Using a non-permanent marking tool, mark a line on the fabric from the center of the bottom edge to the mark you made in Step 2 above (4 1/4" from top edge). Cut on this line to remove the triangles. Repeat this step on the other two rectangles.
4. Set aside three of the treat bag pieces.
5. On the remaining piece, draw a 2" equilateral triangle point side “up” about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" from the top edge (long straight edge) using a non-permanent marking tool. Draw another 2" equilateral triangle intersecting the first triangle but this time point side “down” with an overlap of about 3/4" at the top and bottom ends of the triangles.
6. Thread machine with silver metallic thread on top and matching thread in bobbin. Set for a medium straight stitch. Stitch the top triangle; tie knot on back and cut thread. Then stitch the second triangle; tie knot on back and cut thread.
7. Use two of the other rectangles for the lining for the treat bag. Matching right sides together and using the matching thread, sew from the top edge down around bottom point and back up to top edge using a 1/4" seam allowance. The open side will be the “top” of the treat bag.
8. Trim corners, but do not turn this lining right side out. Press.
9. Use the piece decorated with the silver metallic Star of David and the remaining plain piece for the treat bag. Matching right sides together and using the matching thread, sew from the top edge down around bottom point and back up to top edge using a 1/4" seam allowance. The open side will be the “top” of the treat bag.
10. Trim corners and turn to the right side. Press.
11. To make the top edge of the treat bag, fold under 1/4" and then another 1/4" on both the lining and the treat bag. (You will actually be folding the raw edge on both pieces towards their raw edge seam allowances). Press.
12. To make the “tab” that will signify the handle on the dreidel, fold both long edges of the 2" wide by 3" long strip of fabric lengthwise toward the inside, 1/2" and then 1/2" again. Fold it in half touching the two short edges and press. Using matching thread stitch about 1/8" from the edge of all four sides of the tab. Insert the raw edge of the tab into the center front of the treat bag between the treat bag and the lining by tucking at least 1/2" of the tab into the seam allowance. Pin.
13. Using the 11" length of silver metallic medium rickrack, insert at least 1" of each end of the rickrack at opposite side seams between the treat bag and lining. Pin.
14. Using the silver metallic thread and a straight stitch, sew both pieces (treat bag and lining) together at the top edge by stitching 1/8" from the folded edges. Be sure to “catch” the tab and both ends of the rickrack handle in this seam.
15. Fill your Star of David treat bag with chocolates or trinkets and give it to someone special at the Festival of Lights!
