From the moment they’re born, children seem to need an inordinate amount of storage space for all their stuff. It starts with somewhere to keep all those nappies and sleepsuits and quickly moves on to places for the endless supply of toys!
For a bit of inspiration, take a wander through the nursery department of any of the big high-street stores. You’ll see everything from nappy stackers to toy trunks – but before you splash out your cash, think about making your own smart storage solutions.
One of the easiest – and most useful – makes is a drawstring bag. It’s a great way to use up fabric remnants or off-cuts, too! Make small versions to store socks, pants and vests and hang them on decorative pegs in your child’s bedroom. Larger versions can be used to house everything from laundry to toys.
For more substantial toy storage, buy a plain wooden chest or blanket box and decorate it with paints or découpage. You could even personalize it with the child’s name.
To crate a really versatile storage solution, stitch a sleeve to slot over a coat hanger and then sew patch pockets in various sizes onto one side. Hang it on the wall in a baby’s nursery to keep nappies, lotions and potions to hand. In an older child’s room it could be used for smaller toys or accessories.
If you’ve got a place for everything, you stand at least some chance of getting your little treasures to tidy up at the end of every day – but we can’t promise anything!
